In the wake of last year’s tornadoes that hit Oklahoma, a community of volunteers, ministries and churches, including Daystar, have partnered together to rebuild the region. Just this past November, Daystar had the opportunity to bless a retired couple living in Newalla, Oklahoma who lost everything in the tornadoes that hit the area on May 19th, 2013.
Prior to the tornado, the couple, Roy and Diane Vuncannon, owned a mechanic shop and raised animals on their property, but everything was demolished during the storm. They lost their business, home, cars – everything – and they had no insurance to help cover their losses. Immediately after the tornado, the couple was forced to live in their car, then a small shed, and finally a fifth wheel camper, but all of that changed when Daystar stepped in to help.
Daystar gave the Vuncannon’s a fully furnished, 1260 sq. ft., 3 bed/2 bath 2012 Clayton mobile home, complete with new furniture, stove, refrigerator, air conditioning unit, washer and dryer, and basic household essentials.
Mending Hearts Church, in partnership with Doug Stringer’s ministry, Somebody Cares, also provided the couple with fencing for their livestock, a storage building, a storm shelter and a front and back deck for the new home. Russell Dobbins of Cheka, a local construction company, partnered with Daystar for all the contracting work done on site.
Daystar contributed financially to local churches through our partnership with Somebody Cares, a ministry that specializes in mobilizing the local church in times of disaster. Church of the Harvest served as a staging area for supplies sent by Somebody Cares, while Emmanuel Baptist Church became a point of distribution for the surrounding area. Destiny Church even put off moving to a new sanctuary so they could help with the relief efforts by turning their sanctuary into a warehouse to receive and distribute goods from.
Daystar was also able to bless Joey and Johnna Wallace, a young couple who also lost everything in the tornado, with $10,000 to help rebuild their lives in the aftermath of the storm.
Be sure to tune in on Wednesday, March 26 and Thursday, March 27 at 2:00am, 7:00am & 8:30pm EST for these special episodes of Joni Table Talk to learn more about how Daystar, in partnership with other local ministries, was able to help provide relief to the area.
