Fly eagle fly
Fly high across the vast blue sky;
Able to soar with such great speed
Like you, we yearn to be free.
Fly eagle fly
Across this great and beautiful land,
From the Rockie’s peaks on high
To the Canyon’s sublimely grand.
Fly eagle fly
Faster, higher to soar,
On the winds of the spirit,
To some distant far away shore.
Fly eagle fly
In sunny skies or gray
Wake and softly preen,
Your feathers in sunlight gleam.
Fly eagle fly
Majestic wings now sprawled;
Lift from thy loftily perch on high,
As if the Master had softly called.
Fly Christian fly
Like the eagle you are free.
All your needs He will supply;
From sea to shining sea.[/pullquote4]. Then the eggs hatch several days apart. For the first two weeks, the parents stay close to the nest, sitting on the chicks to protect them and keep them warm. They feed them four to eight times a day. For the first six weeks, the baby eaglet will stay close to the nest and its parents. Once an eagle has learned to take flight, it enters the fledgling phase of development, and this phase is followed by independence where they spend the rest of their days soaring above North America in search of food.
Like the eagle, the hope that comes from God gives new life not unlike that of a fresh breeze that renews our weary soul and allows us to soar above our earthly circumstances. Like the parents of newly hatched eaglets, Christ feeds and protects us until we too can take flight; but unlike the eagles, He will stay with us forever. Rest well, weary traveler, and know that Jesus keeps a careful watch over you. Fly high, child of God. Soar by the power of the Holy Spirit and trust in God to deliver you to great heights.
In sacred symbolism the eagle stands for the power to rise above the physical and human limitations and into the heavens of faith and the corridors of spiritual insight. To the Romans, an eagle was a sign of power. To the Greeks, he was a messenger. And to the Egyptians, he was a sign of eternal life.
Symbolically speaking, the eagle’s wings denote spiritual truths because birds have traditionally symbolized intelligence as demonstrated in the following passage from Ezekiel:
Thus said the Lord Jehovah, A great eagle, great in wings, long in pinions, full of feathers which had broidery, came upon Lebanon, and took a little twig of the cedar, and carried it into a land of traffic; thereafter it took of the seed of the land, and set it in a field of sowing; it took it unto great waters, it sprouted and became a luxuriant vine. And there was another eagle, great in wings and full of feathers, to which behold the vine applied its roots, and sent forth its shoots unto it, in a good field by many waters; it was planted to make branch, and to bear fruit, that it might be for a vine of magnificence (Ezek. 17:3-8).
It is also interesting to note that the eagle has two sets of eyelids. One set is for looking down at the earth, and the other is for looking up at the sky. The special feature allows the eagle superior balance.
Dr. G. Clifton once said, “God gave the eagle cylindrical bones. An eagle’s life is in its bones. Any man, who wants to know God, must have it in his bones. He will have a passion for the things of God. Real life is in our innermost being!” Paul said, “My heart’s desire and prayer for Israel is that they may be saved” (Rom. 10:1). He also said, “For three years I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears” (Acts 20:31). It was in his bones . . . his being! Sometimes we sing, “Oh, How I Love Jesus.” But, is it really in our innermost being?
Lord, give me the strength to soar higher each day, to trust you as my provider, teacher and Divine parent. May your Spirit breathe new life into my tired circumstances that I might reach new levels of knowing Your Heavenly Kingdom. Help me to spread my wings and know the joy of soaring like an eagle.
But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint (Isa. 40:31).
Freedom of spiritual flight flows in the bloodstream of the church and brings us hope.
